Practical tips...
There are many facets to each technique. It is important to observe, practice and master each fundamental.
Footwork- Take short steps to move around opponent. this keeps strong balance and flexibility when changing direction.
Change directions often while sizing up opponent, Keep knees slightly bent to offer 3rd dimension striking opportunities.
Mentally prepare your advance, set toe position, angle of attack and strike in your mind before you strike. This enables muscle memory to take over giving extra speed and power
Headwork...
Keep moving your head, It doesnt take much movement for opponent to miss. Use 3 dimensions for greatest effect. Make sure to change it up as often as is needed. Luring opponent to strike while your guard is down is not recommended but can give excellent opportunity for counter-strike.
Distance...
There are 4 Ranges in a fight. Know them, control them.
1.Out of Range. this is misleading because it seems that no attack can occur, but you can use jumping, side-step, dragon step or other means to cover the distance and strike target. Elbows and knees are useless as weapons at this distance.
2.Long Range. This is a common distance, using forward strikes with a step towards target. Lunge punch or a jumping forward/front snap kick are examples of such strikes. (fighting stance is optional). Elbows and knees are useless at this distance as weapons
3. Short Range. This is another common fighting distance. Any standing stike can be executed from here as long as it is a full extension strike. (Fighting stance or defensive posture is mandatory). Elbows and knees are possible weapons when used with a distance closing technique.
4. This is commonly referred to as "inside your opponent" or "up close and personal". Full extension striking is useless here. Elbows, knees, head, shoulders and hips are optimal weapons. A clinch is almost inevitible. Stay low, but not too low. Be prepared and use it to your advantage.
Attitude...
You should fight ONLY when you need to, And IF you NEED to fight, you must already have the proper attitude. This attitude is the "this isn't a game" mind set. Someone may get seriously injured. Better for you if YOU are the one able to walk away afterwards.
Strike first, Strike Fast and Strike often. Keep applying aggresive pressure until you are in a position to submit your opponent. Submit him then take appropriate action. notify authorities, render first aid, protect your opponent from bystanding opportunists that may rob or continue the assault on him. Treat him not as the common thug he was a minute ago, but as a human being, worthy of your best judgement. There is no need to spit on him, trash talk him, or to threaten him. YOU control your attitude. YOU are in charge. You are a better fighter than he is, now, are you a better man? if you are in control of your emotions and the adrenaline boost, then YES!!!!
Use these fundamentals during every single engagement, wether you are simply sparring, or if you are in a life or death situation.
